First accident on expressway

An accident occurred on the Southern Expressway at 7.10 this morning, at the 8th mile post in Kahatuduwa .The two individuals who were injured were travelling to Colombo. They were admitted to the Horana Hospital and have now been discharged.The police said that the individuals were identified as a foreigner and a local driver and they had been travelling over the speed limit of 100kmph.The expressway was declared open last morning, in a ceremony by President Mahinda Rajapaksa. President declares open Southern Expressway ( VIDEO )

VIDEO: President declares open Southern Expressway Sri Lanka’s first Expressway was ceremonially declared open a short while ago by President Mahinda Rajapakse. The President opened the access road to the Expressway from the Pinnaduwa interchange in southern city of Galle.

President Rajapakse who is also the Highways Minister marked the opening of the Southern Expressway by unveiling the commemorative plaque at Welipenna, one of the eight interchanges on the toll road.

Gale hits Matara

A gale blowing at a speed of about 40km per hour has caused havoc in the Matara area. A number of trees in homes and on the roadside which has resulted in damages to several homes and commercial establishments. Three persons were injured and taken to the Matara Hospital, while ambulances have been sent by the hospital to persons requiring assistance. The power supply in the areas has come to a standstill. FONSEKA FOUND GUILTY; SENTENCED TO 3 YEARS

Fonseka found guilty; sentenced to 3 years

Sarath Fonseka was found guilty by a divided decision in the case regarding the ‘White Flag’ statement and sentenced to 3 years in prison by the Colombo High Court today (November 18).

The verdict divided 2:1 was given by the High Court bench, headed by Judge Deepali Wijesundara and comprising Judges DMPD Waraweva and Zulfiqar Razin.

Justice Waraweva giving his judgment deliberated that Fonseka was not guilty on all three charges while Justice Wijesundara and Rashim found Fonseka guilty of the first charge, of inciting violence through his statement, and found him not guilty on the second and third charges.

Sarath Fonseka sentenced to three years

Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka was sentenced by the Colombo High Court to three years in jail and imposed a fine of five thousand rupees or six months in jail for default. Source By: daily mirror
