Lanka to conduct complete census after 30 years - Hindustan Times

Sri Lanka is getting ready to hold its first country-wide population census after a gap of 30 years, officials have said. The last complete census was held in 1981 where residents of all 22 administrative districts across the country were counted. But subsequently, after the civil war broke out in
1983, only partial census could be held; in the last one held in 2001, the census could only be conducted in 18 districts where the impact of violence was limited.

Training in SL for Army officers of SAARC countries

A contingent of Army officers from SAARC countries are scheduled to arrive in Sri Lanka to participate in a special Army combat training course. The training course will begin sometime next week and will continue for one month the Army Spokesman stated.

Four crew members of the MV Sun Sea that arrived off the coast of B.C. last summer are alleged to be Tamil Tigers operatives who helped organize the high-seas smuggling trip, federal officials say.

Hearings to determine if the four can stay here have been requested by the Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), which alleges the men pose a threat to national security.
The men are being held in segregation at Fraser Regional Correctional Centre in B.Ç., where they have been questioned by the RCMP and border agents.

Floods affect over 3,64000 people in Sri Lanka - Hindustan Times

More than 3,64,000 people have been affected due to floods in several parts of the country, particularly in the eastern province, the disaster management centre said. Around 3,31,418 people were affected in Batticaloa district alone, in eastern Sri Lanka, they said. Sixty three camps have been
set up in which 16,000 displaced people are being provided with relief services. 1,437 houses were totally destroyed and another 3,562 were partly damaged due to floods, the disaster management centre said.

Several man made reservoirs' sluice gates have been opened in the north and eastern parts of the country as rains have continued for about a week now.
