With just two weeks to go until Britain's royal wedding the BBC is looking at how different countries and cultures celebrate their big day as part of the Extreme World series.
From simple civil ceremonies to lavish events that last for days, there are many different ways to mark a marriage.
Some particularly lavish weddings can be found in Asia as shown in this example of a society marriage in Sri Lanka.
