Madu Feast in August gets green light

The Sri Lanka Army has decided to give the go ahead for this year’s Madhu Feast to be held in August.

The Army, upon completion of the removal of LTTE landmines and booby traps from the precincts, has decided to give the green light for the smooth conduct of the annual Madu feast in August this year, a meeting attended by Security Forces and the Police in Vavuniya was told.

The Security Coordinating meeting held on Monday (June 29) evening at the Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni, presided by Major General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander, Security Forces Headquarters, Wanni was attended by DIG Mannar L.I.C. Perera, respective Division and Brigade Commanders of the areas.

No change in venue for first Test

The Sri Lankan Cricket board has decided not to change the venue of the first cricket Test match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan scheduled to be worked off at the Galle cricket stadium. India-Lanka undersea power cable pact soon

The two neighbours will soon sign an MoU to study the feasibility of laying an undersea cable - which will be one-of-its-kind in Asia when completed - to connect their power networks. Sources said the MEA has approved the draft agreement which is to be signed shortly.

Sri Lanka astrologer is arrested

The authorities in Sri Lanka have arrested a popular astrologer who predicted that the president will be ejected from office, police say.

Chandrasiri Bandara announced last week that the government would flounder in September and October because of political and economic problems.

The opposition have condemned the arrest and warned that the country is heading towards a dictatorship.

Military victories ruled out of election propaganda

A circular issued by the Media Centre for National Security has forbidden the use of military victories as propaganda for the elections. MCNS director said in a letter that using images of the forces in posters, cutouts in print or electronic media by any candidate is illegal. He further added that ex-service personnel could with written permission use such pictures in election.

Jackson family anger mounts

The family of Michael Jackson may seek an independent autopsy amid mounting anger and frustration over the final hours of the tragic pop icon’s life.

Jackson’s family members were today huddled at their family compound in the northern Los Angeles suburb of Encino, where they have been based since the most famous member of their clan died suddenly on Thursday aged 50.

The Los Angeles Coroner’s office said on Friday a preliminary autopsy on Jacksonwas inconclusive and a final cause of death will not be known until exhaustive toxicology tests are completed in “six to eight weeks”.

Jackson’s body was released to his family under cover of darkness late on Friday, and is being kept at an undisclosed location, officials said.

Senior LTTE cadre in Kodikamam Area Shot Dead

(Lanka-e-News, June 25, 2009, 5.45PM) Having being informed about the presence of a few suspected persons in Kodikamam area, Jaffna 522 Brigade troops conducted a special search in the area yesterday (24) morning. As the troops passing Iyattalai area around 8.00 a.m., troops observed one suspect hiding himself behind a bush and attempting to throw a hand grenade towards them.

However, alert troops instantly opened fire at the suspect and killed him on the spot. Subsequent information revealed that the suspect killed by the troops was a senior LTTE cadre named Salappan. Later, troops recovered one micro pistol, two hand grenades, one mobile phone and Rs. 6100/- in cash along with the dead body.

France condemns Sri Lanka arrests of UN personnel

France, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, condemned on Monday the reported arrest of two staff members of the United Nations working in Sri Lanka who were detained by security authorities.

"We condemn the arrest announced by the United Nations of two of its agents by the Sri Lankan authorities," a French Foreign Ministry statement said.

Oval holds no fears for Sri Lanka's Sangakkara

LONDON (AFP) — Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara said the fact his side had not played at the Oval this tournament ahead of Friday's World Twenty20 semi-final with the West Indies would not hinder his side.

The West Indies have enjoyed arguably their two best results of this competition at the south London ground, thrashing Australia by seven wickets in the group stage and defeating England by five wickets, in a rain-affected match, to book their place in the last four on Monday.

Sri Lanka, unbeaten at the tournament, have so far played only at Lord's and Trent Bridge, where the pitches are not as quick and bouncy as the surfaces prepared at the Oval.

The worn wickets at both the other venues have aided Sri Lanka's impressive spin attack but Sangakkara, speaking after practice at the Oval here on Thursday, said conditions at Surrey's headquarters would also suit his team.

"We've played one-day cricket here before, it seems a pretty even track with good bounce and I think it will stay consistent right throughout," said Sangakkara.

Lanka bourse among world's best performing markets

COLOMBO, June 18 (Reuters) - Sri Lankan shares jumped 2.61 percent on Thursday to become one of the best-performing bourses among the world stock markets after a global recession, with top bluechips hitting over one-year highs.

Turnover hit a record of 2 billion rupees ($17.5 million), more than four times last year's daily average of 464 million rupees, according to a bourse official.

The rupee closed flat with the central bank preventing appreciation through buying dollars.

The bourse has risen around 59.9 percent so far for this year and 26 percent since the government declared victory in a near 26-year war.

Only China's Shenzhen Stock Exchange .SZSB has given a higher return this year among Asian bourses, according to Reuters data.

The bourse' performance is more than double of the benchmark emerging market equities .MSCIEF, Reuters data showed, and among one of the few global stock markets to have recovered almost all its losses since September.

The market fell 59.2 percent last year due to an intensified war and high inflation.

The Colombo All-Share Price Index rose 61.05 points to 2403.97, its seventh straight rise and the highest close since Sept. 1, with foreign inflows yet to pick up.

"There is some renewed foreign interest on John Keells shares," said Geeth Balasuriya, head of research at Acuity Stockbrokers. "IMF loan hopes and the interest rate cut also helped the market."

The central bank on June 10 said Sri Lanka's request for a $1.9 billion IMF loan is expected to be approved by the end of June, though IMF has yet to comment. [ID:nCOL430797]

Two central bank officials told Reuters the central bank had only asked for $1.9 billion, but said the IMF could increase the amount to $2.5 billion before finalising the package.

The central bank cut its policy rates by 50 basis points on Tuesday to boost access to credit and spur economic growth [ID:nCOL436423], while T-bill rates have steadily fallen and the benchmark 91-day T-bill was at 11.56 percent on Wednesday.

Novel Influenza H1N1: two positive, 9 under observation, says Director IDH

Nine persons are under observation for suspected Novel Influenza H1N1 (swine flu) at the Infectious Diseases Hospital (IDH). Only two cases have been confirmed positive so far while another patient’s blood samples have been sent for tests, says hospital Director Dr. Anura Senanayake. There is no possibility of the flu spreading outside the hospital as all preventive measures have been taken, he added.

Pakistan arrests Sri Lanka cricket attack suspect

Pakistani police said Wednesday they had arrested one of seven men accused of plotting the deadly attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in the eastern city of Lahore in March.

Six policemen and two civilians were killed and seven Sri Lankan squad members were injured when militants launched a gun and grenade attack on the team as they travelled to a match on March 3.

"We have identified seven men accused of planning the attack and one of them has been arrested," Lahore police chief Pervez Rathor told reporters.

Rathor identified the suspect as Zubair, also known by his alias Nek Mohammad, who appeared at the televised press conference in Pakistan's cultural hub Lahore with his face completely covered in a black mask.

Lanka seeks international help to capture KP

The government is seeking international help to nab LTTE fugitive leader K Padmanathan. The Sri Lankan government has forwarded details to other countries seeking his arrest, Foreign Minister, Mr Rohitha Bogollagama said.

“In terms of world opinion and also in relation to how we could counter LTTE terror network forces, there are still some elements at large,” Mr Bogollagama said.

“That is why we have gone very much public in terms of seeking of the arrest of K Padmanathan. That is important. That is one such person,” he told a TV channel.

Mr Bogollagama said the government might have countered terrorism comprehensively by defeating the LTTE, “but a lot more has to be done”.

The Tamilnet reported on January 30 this year that LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran had appointed Pathmanathan, “a high profile representative of the movement,” as its international face.

“Pathmanathan will be representing the movement in any further peace initiatives and will be the primary point of contact for engaging with the international community,” a letter sent to various international actors by the LTTE's department of internatio nal relations, said. – PTI

New Zealand hope they can benefit from inside knowledge on Sri Lanka’s mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis in their crucial World Twenty20 clash at Trent Bridge on Tuesday. Black Caps captain Daniel Vettori has turned to teammate Brendon McCullum who played with Mendis in the Kolkata team at the IPL.

“Fortunately Brendon was at Kolkata with him and saw quite a bit of him,” said Vettori.

“He’s been trying to offer as much insight as possible. But he’s going to be an immensely difficult prospect - along with Murali and (Lasith) Malinga - and I don’t think we want to under-estimate (Nuwan) Kulasekera.

“He’s bowled wonderfully in one-day cricket. It’s a total package for them in terms of their bowling line-up. Those three are probably the three of the best Twenty20 bowlers in the world.

“Any time they turn up to the crease you know you are in for the battle.

Cricket fans in the Jharkhand capital Monday burnt Indian cricket captain and city boy Mahendra Singh Dhoni in effigy to protest India’s exit from the ICC Twenty20 world cup following successive defeats in matches against the West Indies and England.
Around 50 cricket fans, mostly youth, gathered near Siddo Kanhu park and shouted slogans against Dhoni.

The protesters also burnt Dhoni in effigy. “Dhoni took the T20 world cup lightly. It seems Dhoni is more fascinated by glamour world instead of cricket,” said Shyama Kumar, one of the protesters.
Another protester Ravi Kumar said they were “shocked and disappointed” at the way Indiaplayed in the tournament. “Indiashould have taken a lesson from Australiawhich failed to get place in Super 8,” he said.

Police patrolling near the under-construction house of Dhoni at Harmu road in the city has been beefed up. There were fears that angry fans could also attack it, like 2007 when Indiawas ousted from the world cup. The protesters had demolished the boundary wall, but after India’s victory in the Twenty20 tournament the same year, cricket fans had come to rebuild the wall.

Uva PC polls nominations from June 17 to 24

Nominations for the Uva Provincial Council polls will be accepted from Wednesday (June 17) and will end at noon on June 24. Accepting of deposits from independent groups will end at 12 noon on June 23, says the Elections Secretariat. The Elections Commissioner is to announce the date of polls after nominations close.

Police inefficiency due to non-implementation of Independent Commission: UNP

Most promotions in the Police have been made through political influence since the Independent Police Commission is non-functional. This is due to the government’s inability to implement the 17th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, say the United National Party (UNP).

UNP Kandy district parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella charged that the government’s failure to implement the constitutional amendment has led to the inefficiency of the police. When a journalist questioned as to what steps the UNP proposed as the main opposition in Parliament to pressurize the government to implement the amendment, Mr. Kiriella did not give a direct answer. Instead he commented on other issues and avoided providing an answer.

Bandarawela blaze spreading towards villages

A fire which broke out in a forest reservation at Attalapitiya in Bandarawela three days ago has spread and destroyed nearly 400 acres of the reserve. Health Ministry’s dengue control inadequate, say doctors

The Health Ministry has failed to implement in Sri Lanka the Dengue control methods followed by other countries, says the Government Medical Officers Association. The Association’s Assistant Secretary Dr. Upul Gunasekera says that the current steps taken by the Ministry is inadequate. He said that public participation is vital to bring this disease under control. Medical attention being delayed to those who are afflicted has contributed to the higher death rate of dengue patients, Dr. Gunasekera told Adaderana.

850 children that have lost both parents live in welfare villages

(Lanka-e-News, June 12, 2009, 9.25 AM) Minister of Child Development and Women’s Welfare Sumedha Jayasena says that among 50,000 children that live in welfare villages 850 have lost both parents. She revealed these facts addressing the cabinet press briefing held yesterday afternoon (11) in the parliamentary premises. Mrs. Jayasena said that her Ministry is still looking for if either of the parents of these children is living in the camps. The 349 children that lived in two children’s homes in Kilinochchi have been brought to the Ministry-owned buildings in Vavuniya and they have been provided with facilities, the Minister said.

She further stated that the parentless children would be provided with the protection in permanent children’s homes sponsored by the S. O. S. The Minister pointed out that the Ministry has begun pre schools for the 50,000 children in the camps recruiting 150 O/L passed persons as teachers. The women in camps will be provided with professional training through the resource centers run by the Ministry.

Pro-Tiger Canadian MP detained at BIA, to be deported

Staunch pro-Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) Canadian parliamentarian Bob Rae who arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport at 11.30 last night with a one-way ticket has been detained and is to be deported soon, say Immigration and Defence sources. Bob Rae had hit out at Sri Lanka while speaking in the Canadian Parliament recently and accused the Sri Lankan government of carrying out genocide against the Tamils and killing of innocent civilians. Not stopping at that, he had demanded that Sri Lankashould be banned from the Commonwealth of Nationsas well.

With his well known pro Tiger stance and his possessing only a one way ticket raises serious doubts of his intentions in the island, say officials.

He also said that the international community has no reason to doubt Sri Lanka’s capability in finding such solution as it has already overcome a challenge that the world was unable to achieve. He made this comments on Tuesday (June 2) addressing the 11th Regular Session of the UN Human Rights Council held in Geneva.
