Most promotions in the Police have been made through political influence since the Independent Police Commission is non-functional. This is due to the government’s inability to implement the 17th Amendment to the Constitution of Sri Lanka, say the United National Party (UNP).
UNP Kandy district parliamentarian Lakshman Kiriella charged that the government’s failure to implement the constitutional amendment has led to the inefficiency of the police. When a journalist questioned as to what steps the UNP proposed as the main opposition in Parliament to pressurize the government to implement the amendment, Mr. Kiriella did not give a direct answer. Instead he commented on other issues and avoided providing an answer.
