No moral right to hold another Presidential election, JVP tells President
Mahinda Rajapaksa has no moral right to hold another Presidential election as he had already pledged to abolish the Presidency before his term ends, says the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). In a letter to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva states that the attempt to hold a Presidential election even when two more years of the term remains and casting aside the MoU signed with the JVP on behalf of the country and without any regard to the mandate he had already received tantamount to an unethical act that goes against the mandate. All countries must join against terrorism - President
"Terrorism is not only a problem for Sri Lanka. It is also a problem for the whole world". ll these countries that have been fighting and talking against terrorism must get together and put a stop to this menace", said President Mahinda Rajapaksa in an interview with News X India.
Kumaran Pathmanathan alias KP's arrest last week was very important for Sri Lanka because he was the person who claims to be the new leader of the LTTE after the death of V. Prabhakaran, the President said.
He said the International Community must now help Sri Lanka to crack down on the international financing arm of the LTTE, and that the LTTE was still very active in some countries, especially in South-East Asian and European countries. It should be a solution which can be agreed by all communities.

Born in Manipay,

Following the victory of the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) in the April 2, 2004 Sri Lankan legislative elections, he was mentioned as a candidate for Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, but on April 6 President Kumaratunga appointed Mahinda Rajapaksa to the post. Four days later, however, he became Foreign Minister again in the new cabinet.
During a BBC interview he was asked if he thought he was a traitor to the Tamil people since he was a minister in a Sinhalese-dominated government. In reply he said, “People who live in

The outstanding victory achieved by the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) in the elections held yesterday to the Uva Provincial Council and the Jaffna Municipal Council is seen by me as a victory for all who love our motherland.
In a situation where democratic expression had been denied for three decades by the forces of terror, the ability to hold elections no sooner terrorism was defeated and thus providing the opportunity for democratic expression to the people of Vavuniya andJaffna, is also seen as a victory of our policies to stabilize democracy.

Five Lankan fishermen still stranded in India
The five Sri Lankan fishermen, who had accidentally reached the Indian shores at Sangameswaram in Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh last month when their mechanised fishing trawler developed a technical snag, are biding their time to get back to their homes.
Three of them – captain Rohan Chaminda, 34, Loku Greeganage Padmalal, 37 and Kodikara Saman Priyantha, 29 – are from Mirissa village of Matara district located at the southern tip of the island nation, while D.P. Wikramanayaka, 43, and Dehivalege Nimesh Chanaka, 20 joined them at Trincomalee Port as last minute substitutes for two other fishermen who fell sick on their way from Mirissa.
All the five set out from Trincomalee on July 11 in the international waters in search of the lucrative tuna fish, but lost direction after the boat’s engine failed and developed a huge cavity at the bottom. They reached the Indian coast near here in the early hours of July 20 and voluntarily reported before the Nagayalanka police. The police did not arrest them after they were convinced that it was a genuine case of distress on the high seas.
They have since then been staying put in a makeshift tent on the premises of the Nagayalanka Tahsildar’s office, waiting to hear the good news of deportation. A local voluntary organisation is lending a helping hand to the revenue officials in providing food to the beleaguered foreigners. (Hindu)
