Sri Lanka can win WC if selectors aren’t influenced - Ranatunga [ VIDEO ]

Sri Lanka can easily win the 2011 World Cup if the selection process is not interfered with by political forces, former World Cup winning Captain, MP Arjuna Ranatunga told Ada Derana.

Speaking exclusively to Ada Derana on the Glass Box segment, DNA MP Arjuna Ranatunga said that Sri Lanka were not prepared at the moment for the World Cup in February but if the right team is chosen the country can easily win the tournament.

“For the first time our team is considered one of the favorites going into the tournament. Although the team has not been able to practice on the domestic pitches I still think there’s enough talent to win the trophy,” he said.

Ranatunga stated that the fact that Sanath Jayasuriya and Chaminda Vaas were included in the 30 man initial squad was not a cause for alarm but that the problem may come if they are included in the 15 man squad. However, he added that if no political forces interfere with the selection process, the committee will make the right decision regarding this.

Speaking about the current state of Cricket in Sri Lanka, Ranatunga said that although money dominated the sport in modern times it was never allowed to be a governing force behind the management of the game during his time in the Cricket team.

“Players shouldn’t solely be blamed for this. The government and the management are to blame because they allowed this to happen,” he said. Source By: ada derana
