Sri Lanka main opposition's party convention to ratify new constitution today - PHOTO

Dec 12, Colombo: Sri Lanka's main opposition United National Party commenced its special convention under the patronage of its leader Ranil Wickremasinghe this morning at the Sirikotha party headquarters in Pita Kotte.

The much awaited party reforms are to be presented for ratification and a new constitution is expected to be adopted at today's meeting.

"The new Constitution of the party is to be endorsed today," General Secretary of the party, Tissa Attanayake has told the local media.

Attanayake said that authorized and officially invited persons can only take part at the event according to a court decision.

Addressing a media briefing yesterday Sajith Premadasa, the charismatic UNP MP from Hambanthota district who is gaining popularity among the party members as an effective leader has said that from today the process of making party decisions by a single leader would be over.

"Tomorrow would be a day when democracy would be restored in the party and it would be a stepping stone for the party's revival and rebirth," Premadasa told the media.

According to the present constitution of the party the current UNP leader Ranil Wickremasinghe is appointed for life.

The party had been plagued with internal disputes over Wickremasinghe's leadership and the grand old party has failed to secure a victory in any of the polls, provincial or general, held within the last 9 years.

In October a group of 25 UNP parliamentarians led by MP Dayasiri Jayasekara threatened to sit independently in the Parliament if reforms in the party were not brought soon and the crisis over party leadership was not resolved.

As a result, a reforms committee headed by UNP MP Joseph Michael Perera proposed the new party constitution that includes party and the party's Working Committee approved the reforms. Source by: colombopage & photos: lankaenews
