UNP adopts new constitution to topple Lanka govt - MSN India

http://www.lankamagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/UNP.jpg Colombo, Dec 12 (PTI) Sri Lanka''s main opposition, United National Party (UNP), has adopted a new constitution aimed at toppling the government at the earliest given opportunity.

The new additions to the country''s grand old party''s constitution take away the powers of the leadership to act arbitrarily which the party supporters believe as the reason for the UNP remaining in Opposition for a long time.

Thousands of party supporters gathered at the UNP headquarters to approve the new constitution that was pushed by a group of "reformists" headed by the son of the late president Ransinghe Premadasa.

Ranil Wickremasinghe, former prime minister and current Opposition leader, has remained the leader of the party since 1994 despite him being defeat at two presidential elections in 1999 and 2005.

His style of leadership came under fire by his party men over the years and many ended up joining the government receiving cabinet portfolios.

According to the amendments introduced to the party constitution today, the senior positions, including the leader of the party, will be selected by vote if no consensus could be reached.
