Sri Lanka to prosecute public officials over spread of dengue - MSN India

http://www.lankasites.com/images/stories/dengue.jpgColombo, Dec 6 (PTI) Sri Lanka''s health ministry today warned top officials that they will be prosecuted unless they stopped mosquito breeding on their premises as 230 dengue deaths were reported this year.

Health minister Maithripala Sirisena said he instructed the National Dengue Control Programme to initiate legal action against heads of state institutions who maintained mosquito breeding areas.

"Breeding sites are to be located and anyone deemed to be responsible for creating an environment conducive for mosquito breed would be penalised to the fullest extent.

"Compounds of several state institutions and schools had already come under inspection. It had been found that many such locations had not properly adverted to the fact of controlling the spread of the mosquitoes," the ministry said in a statement.

Some 230 people died of dengue this year while 33,000 people infected with dengue fever had been admitted to state hospitals.
