Heavy rains till 10

Heavy rains are expected to persist till 10 this morning after which rainfall is expected to gradually decrease, according to the Met Department. As of 8 this morning the Met Department had recorded 435 mm of rainfall in Colombo, the worst effected area.

“After 10 the rains will gradually decrease but certain parts of the island could experience heavy showers. By afternoon we expect fairly widespread thundershowers,” the Meteorologist on Duty Gayana Hendavithara told the Daily Mirror.
By evening thundershowers of the inter-monsoon period will be experienced.

The Met Department says the prevailing weather conditions are due to the influence of the convergence between the winds of the Northern Hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere within the inter-tropical convergence zone. It is the Southern half of the island that will be most effected by these conditions.
The inter-monsoon period with evening thundershowers is expected to persist till mid- December.
The highest rainfall recorded thus far was in 1992 at 493 mm. (DS)
