The prisons chief VR de Silva said Fonseka had complained of sickness Tuesday evening having returned from court and he was sent to the prison hospital.
Fonseka was attending court Tuesday on two separate cases - the Supreme Court over his appeal to retain his parliamentary seat and the High Court trial over the 'white flag case' where he is charged with making a statement that Tamil Tiger rebels who wanted to surrender were killed.
He is under a 30-month jail sentence with hard labor having been convicted by a court martial.
