8 LTTE ships being used by ex-rebels' international network: Sri Lanka - Daily News & Analysis

Dinesh Gunawardena, the chief government whip minister, informed Parliament today that 11 ships have been destroyed by the armed forces during the past.

At least 8 LTTE ships were still being used for illegal activities by its remaining international network, the government said.

The ships are registered under different names of international orgnisations and are being used for illegal activities such as human smuggling, the minister said.

"A ship named Eeshswari, which was used to smuggle some Sri Lankans to Canada recently, is one of them, can be stated as an example," he said.

Lankan authorities have already taken steps to curb the LTTE activities overseas where remaining elements are still active.

Amid fears that LTTE cadress may try to reunite after the Sri Lankan forces crushed the rebels in May 2009, the government continues to screen hundreds of former Tamil Tiger fighters who are still in custody.

The LTTE waged a three-decade civil war for a separate state for the Tamils of Sri Lanka, alleging discrimination against the minority community at the hands of the majority Sinhalas.

The Lankan military crushed the rebels and ended one of the bloodiest ethnic conflict in Asia that killed between 80,000 and 100,000 people.
