Low temperatures across island
Director General of the Meteorology Department S. H. Kariyawasam told Daily Mirror that the Indian cold wave might have caused the temperature drop in Sri Lanka though the major cause is the cloud cover above the island.
Minimum temperature in Nuwara Eliya was reported at 14 degrees Celsius this morning while temperature in Colombo was down to 24.8 degrees. Areas such as Jaffna and Anuradhapura where the temperature is usually quite high recorded 25.8 degrees and 24.4 respectively. Temperature in Anuradhapura therefore was slightly lower than that of Colombo.
Mannar recorded a temperature of 20 degrees which was similar to Kandy where it was 20.9 degrees. However the temperature in Sri Lanka had not gone down to record low levels though it was lower than usual.
Meanwhile news agencies in India which quoted the Indian Meteorological Department reported that the cold wave which had hit the country will prevail during the coming days. According to the data published by the Meteorological Department India minimum temperature in Karanataka in South India was down to 11 degrees while Tamil Nadu also recorded a minimum temperature of 21 degrees. In New Delhi the temperature was reported to be 6 degrees as foggy weather prevailed. (Yohan Perera) Source by: daily mirror
