Launches luxury ferry service for whale watching - Ministry of Defence (press release)

The Sri Lanka Navy broadening its horizons, yesterday ventured into maritime tourism, and launched a luxury ferry service which operates in the southern coastal areas for whale watching.


The launching ceremony was held under the patronage of Commander of the Sri Lanka Navy, Vice Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake at the port of Galle yesterday (30 Jan).

Navy utilizes one of its luxury Fast Passenger Vessels (FPV) named A-543 for the purpose. The vessel earlier had been used for troop's transportation during the humanitarian operations.

According to Naval sources, the vessel is scheduled to set sail four times per week and operates three to six hours in each tour providing more convenience for both foreign and local tourists.

The whale watching is now a new trend in Sri Lanka's tourism industry. Between December and April months the seas south of Dondra Head and Mirissa are well known for Blue and Sperm whales sightings close to shore.

Accordingly, up to April the vessel will be sailing in between Galle - Mirrissa sea area and will be heading towards Colombo-kalpitya and Trincomalee sea areas with the change of weather and monsoon, the naval sources revealed.

Galle District Parliamentarian Manusha Nanayakkara, Mayor of Galle Mr. Methsiri de Silva, Directors General of the Sri Lanka Navy, Commander Southern Naval Area, Senior officers of the Forces and the Police in the area as well as personnel from print and electronic media also attended.
